A Triathlete’s Loft in Wicker Park
This Wicker Park loft renovation transformed a builder-grade 1990s timber loft in the converted Bucktown Ironwerks building into a warm, highly functional home tailored to its owner's lifestyle. While the client loved the open-concept layout, exposed brick, and industrial character, they needed better organization and more defined living spaces. Through strategic space planning and custom cabinetry, Bridget Galvin Design created distinct zones for dining, cooking, entertaining, and entry while preserving the openness that makes loft living so appealing. A concealed coffee bar and integrated storage solutions - including a custom bike cabinet - help keep countertops clutter-free and everyday essentials neatly tucked away.
Custom millwork plays a starring role throughout the home, particularly in the primary bedroom, where a 12-foot-long wall of custom closets provides ample storage for the triathlete client's gear and wardrobe. To soften the loft's industrial architecture, we introduced warm wood tones that complement the exposed brick, reconfigured the bedroom to showcase more original masonry, and designed a custom arched nook that conceals ductwork while adding architectural interest.
Additional updates include replacing dated track lighting with streamlined linear LED pendants for softer, more even illumination, incorporating playful wallcoverings in the kitchen and bathroom, and repurposing the client's childhood dresser with fresh paint and new hardware. The result is a Chicago loft design that balances industrial character, custom storage, and modern comfort - creating a home that feels both highly functional and deeply personal.
